Altoetting has not only been one of the most significant cultural and historical centres in Bavaria for more than 1200 years now, but it is also visited by innumerable pilgrims each year. Art treasures of world renown are to be found around the expansive, baroque Chapel Square. Just before Christmas, a warm and unique atmosphere prevails in the town centre attuning its visitors in quite a special way to the “nicest holy day of the year”. The spacious square skirted by many Baroque buildings - the small Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace) in its centre - has been the home for one of Germany’s most beautiful Christmas markets for centuries. The Christmas Market in Altoetting is open from Friday, 29th November till Sunday, 15th December 2013, Monday - Friday from 2.00 pm to 8.00 pm, Saturday/Sunday from 11.00 am to 8.00 pm. Daily pre-Christmas programme: Monday - Friday at 5.00 and 7.00 pm, Saturday/Sunday at 2.00, 5.00 and 7.00 pm with choirs and woodwind ensembles. St. Nicolas visits the market daily at 5.00 pm.

Festive opening at 6.00 pm, Friday, 29th November 2013, following the Advent wreath consecration ceremony in the Collegiate and Parish Church. The market offers an attractive selection of handmade and handicraft products and, of course, a good variety of culinary specialties.
For over 400 years Altoetting has kept its Christmas manger tradition alive. The figurative representation of Jesus’ birth was originally implemented by the Jesuit Order as a “pedagogic tool” of their pastoral care. Following Prague and Fribourg (Switzerland), Altoetting already set up a Christmas crib as early as 1601. Despite the “Enlightenment” and the secularization, this lovely custom has continued to be honored to the present day in townhouses and farms alike. The pilgrimage town features lovingly arranged annual cribs in Basilica St. Anna, in the Abbey Parish Church and in St. Michael’s Funerary Church. In addition, one should mention the town crib with sculpted figures in local traditional dress which is to be found in the historic town hall.
