Places of Interest in the Inn-Salzach Region

Apart from the world-famous pilgrimage in Altötting there is much more to marvel at. How about going to Burghausen to see another superlative, the longest castle in the world? Or would you rather visit the former Raitenhaslach Cistercian monastery, the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI in Marktl or the Mühldorf town square to admire the unique Inn-Salzach architecture? As you can see there is so much choice that it is quite difficult to make up one’s mind, so it is best to spend several days in this region and discover the various attractions.

The Inn-Salzach Cycling Region  

The best way to explore the Inn-Salzach region is by bike: set off, slow down and unwind. See the numerous attractions along the way, farm cafés, unspoilt nature or one of the many lakes for swimming. Trekking bikes or e-bikes are best suited for exploring the Inn-Salzach cycling region. You may choose to pedal along the famous Inn Cycle Path or the Benedict Trail, or rather the Innspitzrunde or the Seven Churches Trail – it is up to you.

The Inn-Salzach Farming Region  

The Inn-Salzach region is mainly characterised by agriculture and rural lifestyle. There are numerous direct marketers, organic producers and farm cafés inviting you to shop and linger during your excursion. Farm holidays are a real hit, especially with families with children. Have you ever hiked with alpacas? You may do so in this region!

The Spirit of Advent in the Inn-Salzach Region

A visit to the Inn-Salzach region in Advent is particularly enchanting. In Burghausen the allure of the Advent season comes alive in a magical Advent calendar. Considering the many Christmas markets around it is difficult to decide on a favourite one: the Burgweihnacht [castle Christmas] in Burghausen, the Christkindlmarkt [Christmas market] at Tüßling castle, the Waldweihnacht [forest Christmas] in Halsbach, the Altötting Christkindlmarkt at the baroque Kapellplatz. Moreover, the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf, where the famous Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night" was first performed, is only a stone's throw away.
