The history of the Passion Play in the Tyrolean community begins in 1613 when Bavarian pilgrims saw the Easter plays in Erl on their way to Altötting. This makes it one of the oldest performances of the Passion in German-speaking countries. After a period of plague and war, these passion plays were also performed out of gratitude for God's protection. In the years 1703/04, 1743/44 and 1809 Erl suffered from devastating fires, as a result of which a large part of the records and texts were lost.
But over all these years it was a great wish of the residents to perform the game of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. The Passion Play House in Erl was designed by Robert Schuller and completed in 1959 and is considered an architectural and acoustic masterpiece.
