History
In 1933 the Passion Play was performed for the first time in Sömmersdorf, in the middle of the forest on an open-air stage. After the second performance in 1934 there was a long break. The reason for this was the "Reichstheaterkammer" and the Second World War. It was not until 1957 that the Passion Play could be regularly performed again. In the beginning there were more than 70 participants who brought the play to the stage. Now the number has risen to 300 to 400 participants, attracting over 30,000 visitors every five years.
In 2020, the Passion Play in Sömmersdorf won the amarena German amateur theater award in the “Theater is Life” category.
