The next passion play in St. Margarethen is something very special. In addition to a new direction, the 2021 passion play will get a new text and new costumes for the Jesus actors, Emmaus disciples and apostles. As always, it is performed in the unique Roman quarry, which has provided a breathtaking setting for the passion play in St. Margarethen since 1961 and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2001.

History

The Passion Play was performed for the first time in St. Margarethen in 1926 under the direction of Pastor Josef Kaindlbauer by the parish youth in a family's farm. In 1933 a solemn promise was made by the parish to perform the Passion Play every 10 years. The performances in 1936, 1946 and 1956 then took place in the parish hall and over the years also attracted visitors from other federal states. In 1957 the Passionplayers from St. Margarethen were invited to Mariazell to perform the Passion for a week to mark the 800th anniversary of the Grail Basilica. Mariazell and Altötting are linked by a town partnership and joint membership in the Shrines of Europe, the association of the most important Marienwallfahtsorte in Europe. Since 1961, the game has been held in the Roman quarry every 5 years. The number of participants has risen continuously since then and the number of visitors has also grown to up to 70,000 in recent years.
