History

The passion play in Waal is one of the oldest in all of Bavarian Swabia. The basis for this piece is an old handwritten text from 1791. Originally, the Holy-Cross-Brotherhood organized the Passion performance in connection with the pilgrimage to the parish church of St. Anna in Waal, which keeps a relic of cross particles. In 1770, under the rule of Elector Karl Theodor, all Passion Plays were banned throughout Bavaria, with the exception of the events in Oberammergau and Waal. In 1960 a new passion play theater was built with up to 600 seats. Every year almost 200 amateur actors of different ages from all over the Waal market take part.
